As the royal procession crossed Mireukhyeon (present-day Jijidae Pass) (making its way through the path behind today’s Hyohang Memorial Hall), passed Gwaemokjeonggyo Bridge, and reached Jinmokjeong Pavilion, Prime Minister Chae Jegong stood on the left side of the road, holding the ceremonial tablet. The Royal Guard of the outer camp lined both sides of the road to greet king’s sedan chair, while the military band and female court performers waited to welcome the king’s arrival.

Welcoming of King Jeongjo by Governor of Suwon (Cho Simtae)

Venue Janganmun Gate Program Introduction This event reenacts the mounted messenger’s announcement of the king’s arrival, the military ceremony held in his honor, and the formal welcome by Cho Simtae, the Governor of Suwon. |
As King Jeongjo’s royal procession neared Janganmun gate, the king instructed Minister of War Sim Hwanji: “When the royal sedan chair reaches the Hwaseong fortress gate, there must be a formal procedure for entering the military gate. You shall go ahead to the reception point where the generals are gathered.” .....When the king entered the temporary gate, Cho Sim-tae, the Governor of Suwon, together with several military commanders, led the officers and knelt on the left side of the road to welcome the king.
