King Jeongjo’s Royal Procession of 1795 (Eulmyo Year) |
King Jeongjo’s Royal Procession refers to the grand march of the 22nd monarch of the Joseon Dynasty, who departed from Changdeokgung Palace and traveled to Suwon and Hwaseong to pay respects at Yungneung, the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado (Jangjo), located in present-day Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
Throughout his reign, King Jeongjo personally visited Yungneung several times to practice filial piety. In particular, in 1795 (the 19th year of his reign), he organized a grand eight-day procession to celebrate his mother Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong’s 60th birthday and to conduct the memorial rite for his father.
The 1795 Eulmyo Royal Procession mobilized about 6,000 participants, with meticulous preparations such as road repairs and the construction of a pontoon bridge across the Han River measuring 300 meters in length and 20 meters in width. This procession was more than a ceremonial ritual. It symbolized King Jeongjo’s compassion for his people, his commitment to communication, his exemplary leadership, and his willingness to share in the hardships of his subjects. |
