A water performance blending light, water, and sound, inspired by Joseon Dynasty boating excursions, set against “Yongyeon,” the tranquil pond below Banghwasuryujeong in the northeastern part of Suwon Hwaseong, where King Jeongjo strolled with his mother, Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong, reciting poetry and enjoying music

Banghwasuryujeong and Yongyeon are considered among the most beautiful spaces in Suwon Hwaseong.
Here, surrounded by the atmosphere of autumn, a variety of elegant arts performances unfold through the perspective of Jeongjo, who built this place. Through traditional dance and song in a range of colors performed on Yongyeon Island, on the water stage, and aboard a ferryboat, we hope to share with audiences the “timeless beauty” that Jeongjo sought to create in 1794.

“Beauty shall be enough to strike fear into the enemy.”
Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon, visits Yongyeon, which embodies the full beauty of autumn.
He becomes enchanted by the atmosphere of Banghwasuryujeong and Yongyeon and falls asleep.
In his dream, a crane flies to him and enfolds him,
the boatman on a ferryboat sings of the moon on an autumn night,
Yongyeon transforms into a shining flower garden,
and the singer on the ferryboat sings magnificent lyrics.
Awakening from his sweet Seonyumong, deeply enchanted,
Jeongjo looks upon Banghwasuryujeong and Yongyeon,
which possess the power of “beauty,” stronger than any fortress wall,
and hopes that the place he created will endure for generations as “a place for boating and leisure.”

Prologue
Jeongjo visits Yongyeon, gazes at beautiful Banghwasuryujeong, and falls into a sweet sleep.
Chapter 1. A Sweet Dream Beneath the Wings
A solo crane dance performed by a male dancer. The sleeping Jeongjo travels to a world of profound elegance through the movements of a crane.
Chapter 2. A Flower Garden on the Pond
In his dream, Yongyeon is covered with flowers in five colors. The Chunaengmu dance unfolds as an ensemble of female dancers.
Chapter 3. Four Moons
When the full moon rises over Yongyeon, a ferryboat appears. The oarsman recites poetry, and the singer sings of the moons rising in the sky, in Yongyeon, in the wine cup, and in the heart.
Chapter 4. Jeongjo’s Dream
Banghwasuryujeong and Yongyeon, embodiments of the beauty Jeongjo dreamed of, shine beautifully in the moonlight.
Chapter 5. Woljeongmyeong
A deepening autumn night. Clear Jeongga rings out from the ferryboat.
Chapter 6. Those Who Followed the Great Will
Those who followed Jeongjo’s upright spirit and great will. Their spirit unfolds in the scholars’ dance performed by a male ensemble.
Chapter 7. Seonyumong
Jeongjo awakens from his dream in the cool breeze of an autumn night. He cries out, “Let none depart until they have drunk their fill,” and sings of Seonyumong.
