[Performance Introduction]
<Jinchan> is an immersive art performance created based on the historical royal banquet Jinchan-rye, held in 1795 by King Jeongjo at Bongsudang in Hwaseong Haenggung to celebrate the 60th birthday of his mother, Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong. This work goes beyond a simple historical reenactment and is reconstructed as an expressive dance drama that evokes Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong’s 'Banquet of Memories.'
That day’s banquet resolved the royal family’s grief over Crown Prince Sado’s death and expressed King Jeongjo’s will for political restoration through a solemn ritual. Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong's complex identities as a mother, wife, and royal woman are reinterpreted through an inner narrative that sheds new light from a modern perspective. At the same time, the elegance of traditional court dances is harmonized with cutting-edge media technology. As a result, the audience is no longer just observers but becomes 'guests invited into Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong’s memories,' fully immersed in the performance.
[Features]
1. An Immersive Dance Drama in a Historical Space
- A unique night performance where the audience joins as invited guests at Bongsudang of Hwaseong Haenggung palace, the very site where royal banquets of the Joseon dynasty were held.
2. Modern Reinterpretation of Court Dances - Court dances such as Monggeumcheok (dream of golden ruler dance), Geommu (sword dance), Pogurak (ball game dance), and Gainjeonmokdan(dance depicting beautiful women picking peonies) are recreated through contemporary choreography and media production.
3. Expressive Stage filled with Light, Sound, and Shadows
An immersive media performance combining tradition and technology with 360-degree spatial sound, media façade, laser, and silhouette lighting.
[Story]
《Jinchan – Banquet of Memories》 begins in the darkness of Bongsudang, recalling the night of 1795 from the deep memories of Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong.
The royal banquet King Jeongjo offered to his mother as an act of the 'king’s filial piety' — a ritual filled with both political and emotional meaning — was reconstructed in Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong's inner world as a 'banquet of memories,' where glory and loss, restoration, and forgiveness intersect in her life.
The audience, as guests invited to the royal banquet, joins the emotional journey that spans a woman’s entire life, set on an immersive stage with 360-degree sound and media façades. The language of traditional court dances is deconstructed and recreated to transform into light that emerges from the darkness of Bongsudang. The quiet dance illuminated by this light carries both the sorrow and the glory of the unspoken lives of royal women.
《Jinchan – Banquet of Memories》 is a stage where past and present meet, a space where loss and restoration intersect, and an unforgettable banquet where tradition and modernity are harmonized.
[Program Composition]
Prologue. Palace Entrance: The Gate of Time Opens
Night falls over Bongsudang. Light and sound cut through the darkness, leading the audience into the first scene of the banquet. It is a place where past and present meet, and where the gateway to spiritual awakening opens.
Act 1. Ritual: Majesty of Joseon
With aligned footsteps under golden light, the majesty of the Joseon royal court unfolds.
The group dance, symbolizing order and authority, announces the opening of the banquet, filling the stage with the splendor of royal power.
Act 2. Silence: The Empty Space
Blades cut through memory, and long-suppressed emotions surge within the silence. The sword dance flashes through Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong’s inner world, revealing the sorrow hidden beneath. Though the path of memory is retraced, an emptiness remains, never to be filled.
Act 3. Jinchan: Glorious Moment
The flowing silk sleeves and the dance of peonies unfold on the banquet stage. The group dance reaches its climax in joy, and the glory of the royal court fills Bongsudang with bright light. Yet, the more beautiful the feast, the more clearly the empty seat appears, and the grief hidden beneath the blessings rises to the stage.
Act 4. Reconciliation: Era of Peace
A long-awaited encounter takes place as the two finally meet.
It was a moment of forgiveness and reconciliation, a release from deep sorrow.
In the place where everything has passed, only the ardent wish for the era of peace that King Jeongjo would bring remains. Embracing lost time, an emotional knot is finally tied.
A dance dedicated to the future unfolds, embracing every wound.
Epilogue. Resonance: Echo of Memory
The stage empties, light fades, and sound seeps away like a distant memory.
The moments quickly fade away one by one, and the night returns to itself. The banquet ends, but the memory remains.
